Today's Painting, "Wait For Me, Mom!" by Gordon van Vliet
I liked this young fellow (my son) so much, that I thought I would try again. He always was determined. I think the first words out of his mouth were, "I can do it myself!". At least that is his attitude. Of course if he sees Mom leaving then he's not so self sufficient anymore.
Painting on a small canvas (4"W x 6"H) is quite difficult. I don't think I have ever used such small brushes.
Here is detail shot of the head. You can see the canvas texture which fights the small brush strokes.
He is dragging a red shirt behind him, but it is all in the shadow.
Here is a small chipmunk that I found injured today. I made a little bed in my studio to try and save him. I don't think he is going to make it, but I'll give it a try.

Gordon there are two things about this painting..among others...that really impress me. The strong dark shape you painted that was very detailed, but still simple,(I'm compelled to put too much in my shadows), and the honest use of the blue violet hue for the shadowed side of your sons face. I bail out on that too often and put a more warm fleshy tone in instead. Great handling of his hair too. I think I know him.
You've really captured something with these last two! I especially like the orange values with the all the green surround. Nice work!
Your son is adorable! Excellent work on his expression in this portrait.
its noah! :) what a trooper. this one is especially good.
Very nice.
I wish I could write about my paintings as you can.
Your writing shows a positive outlook. It compliments your paintings which show a happy sense of things.
Very sorry about the chippy. We've found a way to get these tiny squirrel-like creatures to be comfortable with our daily bits of apple so much so that they are getting close to actually coming up to us.
Hmm....
There is much that is wrong in our world and it is easy to focus on. If I choose to emphasis those aspects it begins to dominate my life. So I choose, and it is a daily choice, to focus where I can on life as it could and ought to be. Perhaps by reminding eachother of the tremendous potential that exists to improve, we might realize it. Thank you Robert, for the continued comments.
i like very much how you managed to capture photo like qualities with the colour and detail, while still making it look very much like a painting... brilliant.
my paintings always end up looking like cartoons!
Thank you Ming. I spent about twice as long on this painting as most others. In future ones I am going to try and finish up with thicker paint in key areas. I think the effect will be better.
very nice. strong composition, I like the invitation for the viewer.
Keep up the good work.
Very impressed that you were able to put such expression into such a tiny painting without overworking. Nice job!

Wonderful rendering of your son, Gordon! You've captured that "Hey, wait for ME, Mom" look... just exactly right! Congratulations on a most successful work.
lovely painting and lovely son, congratulations the determination comes across!
funny it is combined with the chipmunk, when my boy was a toddler he always said, the only thing that scare me are the dark and chipmonks!
