This was painted as a commission for the couple at right.

I was able to warm up the tones from for a better appearance then the reference and darken the background to give more presence to the subject.

Due to the limited time for this project I utilized drying agents with the paint.

This painting is mark reverso, : Rocky found in Grimes Glen, New York May 1985. Here he is shown enjoying a cigar.

He was painted in my old workshop setting. A wine tap was used for the cigar prop.

In 1985 I was hiking with a friend when I stopped to look in the stream. Four feet down, through crystal clear water was Rocky, begging to be brought home. He has been a companion ever since.

I love Vettriano's simple, bold style. Here is a small copy sketch done today. Measures 6x6 oil on canvas. I plan on doing more of these. The sparkles are the light bouncing off the wet paint.

If you don't know Jack Vettriano is a contempory Scottish painter. Some hate him and some love his work. I admire his sensitivity to his subject and the deftness of his handling the medium. Jack like to finish his work in one day, often a long day.

I loved painting this model. Her expression and attitude. Lovely girl.

I returned from Canada Monday night. We celebrated my Uncle and Aunt's 50th wedding anniversary. It was so good to see so many Dutch relatives. Some even came from DenHam, OV, The Netherlands, where my mom lived prior to 1953. The house she lived in is linked with a photo map. Way back the home built right next to the street was also connected to the barn. Once when I visited in the early 1970's a pregnant cow was in a stall right next to the bathroom. I watched her give birth while I was there and the calf take its first steps. It seems long ago.

My wife, son and I spent a night at Niagara Falls on the way home. I have a lot of photos to reference and may do some paintings from them. Not of the falls so much, but architectural shots showing the hustle and bustle of the tourist areas.

This is the first Abstract that I am attempting. My thought on this image is a view from above the earth. Fields and smaller indications of life. Inspired by crop circles or mounds and similar contrivances.

Last nights show was very good. Many patrons to see the 60 or so works each by a different artist. I spoke with many people.

This is an illustration piece done by Chara Dow, my niece. It was an assignment for her art classes at Monroe Community College. I like it a lot and think. Perhaps one day we will enjoy her work in print. Great job Chara.

Ah, Jason. Well he modeled for us on a Monday night and as you can see, he works out at the gym. I did 25 years ago and now have begun again on his inspiration.

I thought, "Am I a mouse or a man." So now I have been working out again since October. Slow but steady progress. Feels good. A little less fat and a little more muscle and general feeling of well being. Wish me luck in continuing.

This little painting measures 8 1/8" x 10 3/8" and can easily be cropped to 8 x 10 for a standard frame. Painted oil on canvas and also signed and dated upper right.

Blood is a metaphor of life flowing through our veins. Likewise, the life blood of the city are the individuals who inhabit it and are the city's motive force. First works are for survival, when secured, time and energy are spent on larger , more complex ideas. These ideas are represented as buildings and towers, finally a pinnacle soaring upward. As the towers are illuminated in the sun so too may an Individual reach great heights. All people are benefited from the such success.

Also represent here is the idea of the city as the center or natural result of separate individuals need of fellowship, society. This is a mix from those just surviving to those able to achieve further goals. I have always viewed the tower as an inspiration of what can be accomplished through productive thought and work.

SOLD "Wisdom of the Northwest"

This is a painting of a mask used in tribal ceremonies of the Indians along the upper Pacific coast of North America. This particular mask was once worn by a "medicine man" or "man of wisdom". In the old legends the bird was a symbol of hidden knowledge and mystery. The image is set against a dark background made with Raw Sienna, Black, and Ultramarine Blue.

Painted sold is on 16"w x 20"H triple primed canvas with 3/4" hardwood stretchers. The edges are stapled but painted like the background. It could be hung the way it is. I have also shown the framed example to give you an idea of how it could appear in a frame. I think a gold or dark gold "plein-air" type frame would suit it best.

I am considering additional works with this motif. Perhaps a triple canvas with multiple bird images that intersect for a nice 48" x 20" image or mounted separately as 3 distinct 16" x 20" images. Also a background with an abstract but geographically appropriate imagery.

"Waiting Out the Rain"

"The sky darkened and the rain came immediate and strong. The wind whipped the trees as she took shelter in the conservatory near at the edge of the garden. There resting, wet on the divan she gazed out at the driving rain while windowpanes steamed up at the release of built up heat. She shivered considering the confrontation that lay ahead."

Painted from life on a Monday evening this past winter. Oil on gessoed cardboard, "Waiting Out the Rain" $169.00 , measures 8.5" x 18.5" As a note for those interested in this painting, I need to rework the lower right hand portion of the painting. About 3/4" near and including the signature. I would provide a new photo for approval of the improved final piece prior to shipment.

To the left is a shot I took of the scene I am painting in Honeoye Falls, NY. Here is a satellite view. The brick building with the tower is the old 19th century fire station. It was about 15deg. "By the Sea", an oil study

"By the sea" is an oil study. I enjoyed painting this study of a model often used by Jack Vettriano. I enjoy his painting style. He portrays figures with a bold, strong illustrative quality that I am drawn to.

Seen here is a cloudy, rainy atmosphere with a woman waiting nonchalantly for attention. Her gaze to some passing interest as her hand rest on the sea wall.

Here is our new ad copy for City Newspaper and also being used for the Bach Children's Chorus gala fund raiser. This should be a fun event and I hope you consider supporting this wonderful group.

A painting in the works coming on strong

A few months ago I crashed the hard drive of my computer and lost all my saved images. So today I was re-photographing many of them and I ran across this one.

This painting is one of my favorites. I painted it some time ago and have retouched it and cropped the original to improve the image. So far this is the result. I may do a little more yet before I consider it finished and then show it again.

The atmosphere and glow I find truly captivating. You can see the firelight on her arm and face. A woman reclining on a chaise lounge with her feet up. One hand under her head and one rest on her abdomen. She gazes into the glow of a fire on the hearth and lets her tension and concerns melt away for the evening. She thinks with pleasure about how far she has come and what path she will take next in life.

Plein Air in Rochester and Honeoye Falls, New York

Here I am with a small group of painting friends in late summer paint at the former Ketchum-Deshon House circa 1840 in Brighton, NY where I live with my family.

Richard Ketchum is the listed owner with his family in the mid 19th century. An architect lived here in 1940 and accomplished some upgrades, particularly interior trim and woodwork. he also put a concrete floor in the basement and added a recreation room.

In 1947 the home was sold to Ruth Deshon who had lived on Seneca Parkway in the city of Rochester's, Maplewood neighborhood. Her daughter Nancy is one of the childern who grew up here. Nancy attended school at the University of New Mexico where it is said she founded the "Boots and Saddles Club", a recreational riding club. She eventually became a writer and lived in Hawaii for a time before returning to this home to care for her mother.

I have been living here since 2003 and slowly repairing the house and gardens. It is a pleasure to live in such a wonderful old farm house. It is listed as a Brighton town landmark.

The top picture is me painting, then Todd Ryan, and finally Josi Etter. Also present and taking the pictures is Richard Thomas. Unfortunately we did not get his picture.

Todd has a blog of his work and has participated in many shows in the Rochester area.

Josi and I are discussing art trade secrets here at left. Note our serious demeanor. Josi recently was a participant in a juried show at the Rochester Memorial Art Gallery. Her piece was quite striking.

Richard has been a life long artist and I have collected several of his pieces.

And me... well you know enough, with a little more each time.

To the left is a shot I took of the scene I am painting in Honeoye Falls, NY. Here is a satellite view. The brick building with the tower is the old 19th century fire station. It was about 15deg. F and quite cold standing next to the old mill falls with the mist blowing over. I joined Corinne Avery from the GVPAP who hosted this fun time. I need to do a few touch ups to the painting and then I will show it to you.

As a final note, Chris Kolupski (the fine artist currently holding the "Before & After" show at the Framing Edge) is scheduled to be featured on the front page of the Living Section C of the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle this Sunday February, 24, 2008. Take a look and I hope you enjoy it. So far two paintings from that show have sold to a collector from California.

"Rochester Market" is a departure for me in painting style. I consider it nearly uni-tonal in that all the tones are toward the mid-range without much separation. It makes an interesting exercise.

It was windy and cold that autumn day in Rochester, New York. There were lots of people walking by and traffic too. I only had a moment to notice them and decide which ones to put in. The truck was there for 15 minutes or so unloading.

I like the sign commanding, "STOP!", take a moment and notice the beauty of your surroundings.

I am painting there on Saturday again if it is not too cold. Here is a link to a satellite photo. Back in the early 1980's I used to work in the old Noah's Ark building as it was know. One day a train derailed and a box car came right through the wall about 5-10 feet into the building. Very exciting day and luckily no one was hurt.

Here is a painting from the figure group on Monday nights at the Steve Carpenter Studio. I love painting with the artists on Monday night. Models don't come in better physical shape than this young man either. Just look at the great mahogany tones in his skin and feel the latent power.

From the title you can guess what is going on. He is close to sleep while listening to the late night ramblings of Dave Letterman, Jay Len or Conan. These guys help numerous people on our fair planet get to sleep and all cheaper than pills.

It is painted from life, not a photo reference. Gordon generally paints at least one painting a week and sometimes daily painting.

This image is painted on paper from my sons notebook. I forgot my canvas so it was the best I could do. I tell you... I love the medium. The paint soaks in the first layer and drys almost immediately, then progressive layers give more working time with the oil paint.

I am painting under the water works canopy at Cobbs Hill, a granite structure about 100 years old, looking westward at the end of the day. This water works controls the city of Rochester's largest reservoir. Click here for a satellite view from Google.

I purposely separated the head, shoulder and arm from the right shoulder and chest in the background. I liked the composition that way. It looks like someone who is dead asleep awakening and coming "back to life". From sub-conscious to full awareness.

This is the second time I have painted on paper. It acts so much different than working with the medium on canvas or board. The paper absorbs the oil very quickly and fixes itself, so you can move it around. The oil behaves in many ways like water color. All in all a nice change to mix things up a bit.

The idea for this piece comes from the old adage, "Is he a man or a mouse?" Well this fine young man looks meaner than a mouse, so I thought is he a mountain of a man, or simply a man or average? We all judge by looks and often can be deceived. So a closer look is many times warranted.

So in fact, in this painting. Notice the mountains in the background, then look closer. In fact, this gentleman wore a coat of many colors and what you see is his outstretched arm. He is comfortable in his pose, but underneath he sizes you up as you, in turn, consider him.

One of my favorite images by Robert. The frozen train is a stream liner from an amazing era in history. An Art Deco inspired theme that gave rise to huge industrial imagination. Sky scrapers, sleek autos and all manor of appliances. Man as creator taking joy in the shear beauty of form.

Here the trains light streaks a like a lightning bolt across the mid-west landscape to the future. A moment frozen. A fleeting glimpse of greatness. It brings to my mind the beauty of the awesome cities and buildings set against nature in the Star Trek movies. To boldly go where none have gone before. Thank you Robert, for the catalyst of thought that allows this certain imagination.

I find many people are afraid to tackle such dreams and work to make them a reality. Afraid of squandering scarce resources or wasting time. I believe that we can learn to not only utilize the materials we see around us for beautiful purposes, but preserve nature and create new things both in natural and ARTificial through our efforts. I hate waste and love creation.

One aspect of all ART (the creative discipline) is possibility of projecting from within to others the amazing potential. Ideas do matter!

Alone At Turning Point, by Gordon van Vliet

Have you ever been at a crossroads in your life? Did you have a big decision to make?

At time like these sometimes we need solitude... a place alone to ponder the possibilities.. to sort things out. I know I enjoy the time alone. It helps to clarify and identify what needs to be done. When I have come to a resolution, then I can move on. Refreshed.

So here I have presented a small painting. About 8" x 6" and paint at what is locally called Turning Point Park on the lower Genesee River. See Map to Turning Point Park for directions. Here is a wide area where cement barges came up the river to unload their wares and then turn around.

Today there is a wonderful paved walk that eventually will connect downtown Rochester to the port at Charlotte. If you live in the area you owe it to yourself to visit. Bring some problems. You may be amazed that they disappear!
I also painted this evening with Todd Ryan (his work is in the center) and Enrique (work on right). Not shown is a charcoal sketch by Bing. He is new and joining our little art group. I will have more on him as I learn more.

Soft Sun Setting

"Soft Sun Setting" as the title suggests is the best way to describe this lovely sky prior to sunset. It was Tuesday evening at Braddocks Bay on Lake Ontario. View is looking West. A favorite spot for avid bird watchers it sports a great migratory flyway as the birds typically follow the shore line rather than cross open water. Especially popular seem to be the raptors.

Due to illness this was the first painting I have done since last time. I was joined this evening by Todd, Josie and Enrique. Each did a great job. Todd had a unique and very impasto style painting. Click on his name to have a look and comment to let him know you stopped by.

"Begin to Glow", a Plein Air Study

"Begin to Glow" is oil on board and measures 8"W x 16"H It was painted on the portico of Cobbs Hill looking south to Pinnacle Hill. The evening was gorgeous and this lamp in the forground had just begun to glow.

Painting with me tonight were Todd Ryan and Josi Etter. Enrique Stopped by to say hello and many other people gave us their compliments. Below are a couple of photos of the site and my fellow painters.

This is a wonderful place to paint. So much sky, the city skyline and reservoir, all to inspire.

Wave Study One

Here is a study I did last Sunday morning near the Coast Guard station at Charlotte Harbor. Beautiful clear crisp morning with much brilliance on the water. I had to squint just to keep looking at it.

Of coarse painting moving waves is a big challenge and the reason for this study. I need to look at the wave for awhile and think about what color and position was the darkest shadow, reflected light, highlight, etc.

The splash over the rock is never the same twice. Even in the 1 or 2 seconds that the rock is visible it changes dramatically. The green plant algae goes from a wet sheen to a flat sheen in less than a second.

Here is a photo of the site and conditions to give you an idea of what I am up against when I paint this way.

Josi Etter painted with me on this morning. She paints fish because of her love of that subject. She and her husband are avid in their pursuit of the elusive trout by fly fishing. Sketch and Release is her web-site and you may find it interesting.

Josi also is currently exhibiting and interesting portrait of a modern Madonna at the Memorial Art Gallery. The show is called 2007 Rochester-Finger Lakes Exhibition. She calls it "Die Gedanken Sind Frei…" or in English, Thoughts Are Free.

On June 24, 2007 the Rochester D & C newspaper suggested the following regarding Josi's work, "Perhaps the most striking fusion of past and present can be see in Rochester painter Josi Etter's Die Gedanken...."

It is a pleasure to paint with Josi whenever the opportunity arises. Congratulations on your acceptance to this show in order to display your fine work!

"Cross-Rivers"

"Cross-Rivers" is a name derived from the more common cross-roads. Here the Genesee River crosses the Erie Canal. In the Genesee Valley Park are many arched stone bridges and here is one at the intersection with a railroad bridge beyond. The view is West and the canal continues toward Buffalo, New York and the Lake Erie.

The painting, oil on canvas, measures about 8"W x 9-1/4"H.

"Cross-Rivers" was painted on a hot, hazy evening with Todd Ryan and Enrique V. joining the paint out. My wife and son brought along a picnic basket with fantastic treats. It brought the thought that summers painting in France with Renoir and Monet would have been great.

Castles Made of Sand

Here I am building sandcastles at the beach. This a favorite summer past time. I have come to this place on and off for over 40 years. Sauble Beach, Ontario on the base of the Bruce Peninsula of Lake Huron is quiet and little changed in all that time. This beach has it all, sand dunes, a long gradual incline into the water and great rolling breaker during the storm. Spectacular sunsets in the peaceful evenings.

Todays' Painting, "Angelina"

Todays' painting is "Angelina" which is painted oil on canvas 16"W x 20"H. This model was fun and easy to paint. Great pose and personality for this young lady.

This is a mural that my friend recently completed. Its about 4'H x 20"W and depicts the epic struggle between "good and evil". I really admire the the ilumination on the sky near the volcano and flying dragons and also the shield showing through the fire.

We are considering doing some murals together in the future. Have a job to do, let me know.

Todays' Painting, "Whispering"

The painting today is another from the beans that are flowering. I planted these about the 2nd or 3rd week of August. They just have tiny beans now and with luck I will get a meal or two. At least they are fun to watch grow.

This one measures 5"W x 6"H on canvas. I call it "whispering". So many of the blossoms appear as small heads or skulls. So I am trying to capture them with imagined expressions or conversations. Here the two blossoms appear in close proximity to one another as if telling secrets. Perhaps, "Who's the bloke with the paint brushes?"

Todays' Painting, "Racing Autumn"

This is a fun new painting called, "Racing Autumn", about a little pole bean flower gazing at his ripe older brother and wondering if he can beat the frost and grow up too.

Oil on canvas the painting on the left is 4-1/4"W x 4"H and the one on the right is 1-1/16"W x 4"H. Both are painted on the same canvas in a 6"W x 4"H footprint. They could be cut apart or framed together with a mat surrounding and separating them.

I really like how the appearance of this bean blossom seems to show a face and personality. It also reminds me of the monster in "Alien" when it speaks to Sigorney Weaver.

Todays' painting, "Quarter Pepper" is 6"W x 4"H oil on canvas. This is my second painting in the pepper format and is the exact pepper used in the first painting.

The quarter is not an American quarter, but a Dutch quarter obtained on my last trip there in 1984. Now Holland uses the Euro like so many other countries in Europe.

My pepper crop is growing well.

Comment: i took several photos of pepper plants today because i was doing a painting of the kirby barn [what else would i do] at the painting out but i was sitting next to a field of peppers. they were allowing a large group of plants go red. it was a great day with lots of clouds. as usual i love your site and the painting is great. This is my new painting, "Penny Pepper". It is a little larger, 7"W x 5"H on 1/4" hardboard.

To tell you the truth, I am not happy with the pepper and found it extremely difficult to do. What do you think? Please comment for all to see if you can.

The penny was easy.

The pepper, a mighty hot one, had such bright colors and close values. I went back and forth more than once to arrive at this stage.

At another forum the article (speech) by Fred Ross sparked many dozens of comments on both sides of the issue(s) raised. I invite you again to read that speech and comment here if you will.

Comment: your comment about your painting penny pepper......i had a dream one night and only remembered the fact that i had dreamed the color red.....the next day there was a news article about Degas on the morning news......the quote by degas jumped into my head " you can make a painting out of anything even radishes" i went to the store and bought a bunch of radishes and did 3 small paintings in that one day of the radishes. i got the red out onto my canvas and was very happy. not all of the paintings satisified me but i had tried. i am all ways looking forward to your painting of the day. Judy p.s. peppers are very hard to capture i think it is because of the smooth skin and the [what looks to me as a] blue highlight. i know because i have tried also.

These lions are actually bronze locks acquired on a trip to nepal in 1984. They on standing on silver foil. I was most concerned with the composition of this piece.

I liked this young fellow (my son) so much, that I thought I would try again. He always was determined. I think the first words out of his mouth were, "I can do it myself!". At least that is his attitude. Of course if he sees Mom leaving then he's not so self sufficient anymore.

Painting on a small canvas (4"W x 6"H) is quite difficult. I don't think I have ever used such small brushes.

Here is detail shot of the head. You can see the canvas texture which fights the small brush strokes.

He is dragging a red shirt behind him, but it is all in the shadow.

Here is a small chipmunk that I found injured today. I made a little bed in my studio to try and save him. I don't think he is going to make it, but I'll give it a try.

Today's Painting, "You Called?" by Gordon van Vliet

This painting was fun to do. The little boy has an expression of be interrupted at play and inquiring the nature of the disturbance. I love the setting among the fruiting grasses.

It is oil painted on canvas 4"W x 6"H.

I plan on doing a few more in this genre and look forward to your remarks.

Today's Painting, "Young Woman Study" by Gordon van Vliet

Shown is an oil study 16"W x 20"H that I worked on recently.

My emphasis on this piece was to get the posture of the body to relax in the seat. I think the posture is pretty good. There is a real sense of how her abdomen rests.

The right arm(viewer look left) was repainted two or three times to correct fore- shortening issues. Even though it appears that way in life, I will change it and increase the girth of her upper arm there. It will be a better image that way.

Then this one will get set aside.

I hate to overwork a painting. If I do not like how it is progressing, often I get to a point of just starting over. I like the process best when it flows smoothly from the beginning.

Tomorrow I will post a small 4x6 inch painting of a small boy. Til then, enjoy.

"Hillside Inn" by Gordon van Vliet, oil on board was painted one morning last week.

I love the feel (atmosphere) of this piece.

The composition shows this old mansion of 12,000 sf just peaking out from beyond a hedge row and tucked in the woods. Set on 30+ acres in Wyoming, NY. Shown is the second floor and attic portion of the building.

Afterwards I joined some fellow painters including "The All Weather Gang" for a lunch inside. Wonderful morning.

Today's Painting, "Reflecting" by Gordon van Vliet

Here is the 2nd oil painting of the day at Pultneyville Marina. I call it "Reflecting". This one took about 1-1/2 hours and I chose a simple composition so I could get it finished. To the right you see the subject I was painting.

I am intrigued with painting water and reflection so that aspect drew me to this subject. I liked the way the boat hull reflected in the water and the water in the hull. This was interesting to do without a photograph, as the image in my view changed constantly, with wind, boat wake, cloud and sun altering the surface and the light.

Sometime I would enjoy working from a photo reference to paint both, static images which would appear abstract and moving images to catch the life in the situation.

I also want to study painting multiple scenes within a scene. The water, the image reflected in the surface, the water reflected in an adjoining surface, the fish swimming in the water and the surface at the bottom. These types of paintings I find very interesting.

During the GVPAP events of the day we voted for the 4 best images of the morning and also the afternoon. I was quite shocked that my fellow artists choose this as one of the four best in the afternoon. I think they liked the composition and that is what I like best about it as well.

Today's Painting, "Willow Brothers Four" by Gordon van Vliet was painted at the GVPAP annual meeting and paintout at Pultneyville Marina.

The picture at right shows the scene. What a great day. Later in the day I did a second painting which I will show tomorrow.

This past weekend in the mountains was great. My friends took me to Saratoga Racetrack for an afternoon of horse racing. My first time and I had alot of fun. Afterward we had a nice dinner in the town and enjoyed a street music festival as well. Wonderful place.

Last week I mentioned an upcoming newspaper article. It came out this weekend in the paper.

I was quoted as follows: "It (plein air painting) teaches you to use a looser style and more speed," says Brighton artist Gordon Van Vliet, 46. "The colors and shapes are constantly changing outdoors, and you have to get a sense of the place."

Well it has been a busy, busy week. So not too much in the blog department. Sorry folks. I was painting tonight, but I won't post that painting for at least 1 week. Last Thursday I painted at Hillside Inn and that is turning out well but not yet finished.

Tomorrow is the annual meeting of the GVPAP and we will meet and paint at Pultneyville Harbor on Lake Ontario. Weather is great.

From there I leave for a mini-vacation and painting at Great Sacandaga Reservoir at Northville, New York in the Adirondack Mountains. So that will take my time until Monday when I come back. So next Monday or Tuesday will be the next post.

To the left are a couple of picture when I painted at the High Falls in downtown Rochester a couple of months ago. Everyone have a good weekend. I am off to paint.

Today's painting, "Reverie" by Gordon van Vliet was oil paint on canvas 16"W x 20"H. She was a fun model to paint, a very sweet girl. As she relaxed into the pose her disposition became thoughtful. What does a model think of when being painted by several artists?

I particularly like the back ground of this painting, the vase, flowers and pedestal. I will do a small amount of work to her face... add warmth, perhaps a little more cheerful and reduce the strength of her fore leg. Her arm will be a little thicker.

Grandpa (Opa) was an Artist too

This is an extra post focusing a little on my historical roots. Many of you, particularly those outside the USA, have expressed an interest in my background. So I will share a little now and more as time goes on. Please, all of you, let me know how you enjoy these insights in to the creation of an artist.

My Opa (grandfather) Lendert van Vliet, or in short Leen (pron. lain) was an artist too. Back in March 1970 he painted this shorebird (known as a "kluut" in dutch) while living in Ermelo, NL. Opa gave it too me as a present when he came to visit in 1972. It is very much in the "colorist" tradition, very little tonalism. He created it with oil on a board measuring 9-1/4"W x 5-1/2"h. He painted a dog (basset hound I think) for my brother and also a painting of his new home for my sister.

Opa was a bit of a daredevil. My father told me he once used motorcycle to jump through a hoop of fire. He ran a furniture and millwork buisness and was in charge of the local fire department in Kootwijkerbroek, NL. Later my uncle had the same position at the fire department and also was a partner with another uncle in the millwork business. My uncle Lien showed me the fire station where a 12 year old painter was commission to paint a mural of the great fire in those parts.

It brings back fond memories to view this shorebird painting and also a reason to paint, continuity of a tradition. Family history is always interesting to me. My parents, brother an dsister the only members living in the United States. My parents combined had a total of 23 siblings in their family from the Netherlands. Now with my cousins, they live worldwide. It is interesting to understand the different cultures and the continuing histories of each one.

Here is a photo taken while my father was living in Aarlanderveen, NL around 1938. This is where the family lived for many years. They ran a buisness there making all the fine cabinets, windows and doors for new homes. Their shop was right on the canal. I believe this town is now part of a historic district.

Tony (left) was my Dad's older brother and was picked up by the Nazi's in WWII, never to be heard from again. My Opa and Dad (2nd left) both hid regularly during the war as did many men of their age group. Notice that my Dad and his brothers are all smoking except for the youngest. It amazes me in our culture today, to imagine an important family picture being taken, where the children are smoking at ages of approximately 10 years old.

"Aarlanderveen is a small village where all people know eachother and are very active in local associations. The Oranjevereniging (orange union) is one of the examples.

Originally a group of people who organised a nice day for the whole family at Queensday (30 april), is now also organising a party week in summer. And year after year it is a great succes. The mainstreet is decorated with little flags to make the partymood even better." tompt

Today's Painting, "Mary Waves Goodbye", by Gordon van Vliet is 9-5/8"W x 9-1/8"H oil on board. This was painted at the Corn Hill Landing in downtown Rochester, New York. The Mary Jamison is just leaving and waving her flag "goodbye".

The Genesee River seen here flows north, through the City of Rochester, over one of the largest water falls of any city worldwide. This is the reason Rochester grew in the early 1800's along with the Erie Canal project. Water power for milling and transportation for commerce. This area provides local artists with excellent reference material for lots of paintings.

I painted on Wednesday during a GVPAP event. This groups paints "en plein air". As it happens we received some welcome publicity. Please go to GVPAP for more information about it. Today's Painting, "Dream on Fire - Study" Gordon van Vliet

Today's painting is titled "Dream on Fire - Study" by Gordon van Vliet. It is an oil painting on canvas measures 16"W x 20"H.

This is a study that I did this past Wednesday night. Finishing this one will include unifying some flesh tones, adjusting mouth posture and repainting the chair cushion.

Yesterday I painted with GVPAP. I will post that one soon. The group was filmed by R-news, a local cable news channel and a reporter from the Democrat & Chronicle came by to gather information for a story. I will post links as they become available.

Today's Painting, "Great Blue Morning" Gordon van Vliet

Today's painting is newly titled "Great Blue Morning". The original title was "Summer Thoughts". SOLD

This was painted in July of 1992. After viewing some painting shows on television I was inspired to create three paintings from my imagination. The world inside of me, no photo or visual reference. So today I share this one with you. My thoughts were features from a midland beaver pond in the Rocky Mountain range of the United States.

If I were to do this oil painting today I would consider a lighter value background to give the allusion of distance and lighter shadows in the two main trees to de-emphasis the foreground. I would aso create midrange light at the heron.

All in all I like this painting. It is oil on canvas board and measures 18"W x 14"H.

I just figured out today how to turn of the date stamp on my camera so you will not see the date in the future images.

Today's Painting "Eldorado" by Gordon van Vliet

Today's Painting is one I created on a carved sugar pine panel back in 1979. Originally this piece was constructed as a pair of carved doors on a cabinet featuring dovetail construction, zebrawood shelving and a velvet lined interior. After a house fire in the early 1980's the doors were fastened together, then a small amount of re-carving and re-painting were also accomplished.

The image represents the fabled city of "Eldorado" which the Europeans were sure existed in South America as the source of the natives gold. It was never found, but its legend continued. In the center of the image, below the waterfall, can be seen the mist of the rising from the powerful falls, like a ghost of the past. Like a ghost some believe the legend is true. And the treasure hunt continues.

The sugar pine panel measures 1-1/8"T x 27-1/2"W x 35-1/2"H. It was hand carved and painted with fine oil paints and stains. Varnish protection. There is about 1" at the bottom of the panel with additional tree roots that is not visible in this image due to cropping. About forty hours work.

Today's Painting, "Gibson's Landing" Gordon van Vliet

I painted with the GVPAP on Thursday August 10th and we had good attendance. GVPAP will likely post some more paintings on their website. Many talented artists are among the members so be sure to check out the gallery of painters there. We painted at the summer home of Susie Covert. She and her husband were great hosts and I hope to paint with them again.

This painting was fun to do. It is oil on board and measures 8-1/8"W x 8-7/8"H. Underpainted with a peach color. The composition is strong and simple. Because of the slick painting surface (board vs. canvas) I painted most of this with a sable brush where I normally use bristle. I used quite a bit of thinner to allow the paint to set up and only a little medium for finer details like the mooring lines. I hope you enjoy this as much as I do.

The day began overcast and brightened to a crisp blue sky in the afternoon. This week promises the best weather of the year with temperatures in the 70-80F range and low humidity. At one point on this fair day a motor boat came down the lake with six teenage girl water skiing in tandem behind it. All the painters stopped to watch this sight and all the girls looked to be having the time of their life. Wow, what fun!

Keuka Lake is situated in the Finger Lakes region of New York State about one hour southeast of Rochester. This is New York's wine region. Great climate for growing grapes and a thriving wine industry. The receding glaciers from the last ice age carved out the magnificent topography that is home to lakes and grapes.

Gibson's Point is located halfway down the west shore of Keuka Lake just below the Y-formation. The Keuka Yacht Club is located here and has a fabulous web site. The Esperanza Rose also plies these waters. The GVPAP will be staying at the mansion for a paint out this fall. Some great painting and good times are sure to come from this outing.

And finally, small is beautiful!

Today's Painting, "Repose No. 2" Gordon van Vliet

Today's painting was begun on Wednesday night and the model is the daughter of another model that is often my subject. The story is she is awaken from deep sleep by her admirer bearing a gift of a white rose and she is about to deliver her reponse. What will it be?

This pose is intriguing, but still in the rough sketch stage. The main anatomical feature to adjust is her left arm where the forearm appears too long. Her face is rendered well and only needs minor refinement. The hair on the left forehead will come forward a bit.

I believe I will darken dramatically the background both above the model and below the fabric. The highlight on the fabric needs a value lower than on the model.
All the value need adjustment up and down to give depth.

This piece is oil on 16 x 20 stretched canvas.

Egyptian Fantasy

Today I thought I would show you a beautiful mural, truly outstanding that a friend of mine, M. Moquin, commissioned for his Egyptian Revival Palace here in Rochester. You can see more of Michael DeLuca's work by clicking on his name. M. Moquin's home is adorned in the most exquisite manor, sporting old work cat iron fountains under the spot lights, multi towered facade in clad in fine Italian marble and just as real as life Rhino mount in the kitchen. You haven't dined until you've dined at the hand of the best host in Rochester. Hope you enjoyed the pictures.

I started a new figure painting last night and tomorrow will begin also with a new model. On the 10th I will be in wine country painting in Branchport, NY at Keuka Lake.

Today's Painting, "Poetry" Gordon van Vliet

Poetry by Gordon van Vliet is a study establishing the poetry being read by the young lady juxtaposed against the poetic setting where the lotus flowers opens in bloom during the painting session as a metaphor of tribute. The GVPAP was in attendance and I am sure they will have many nice paintings to show from this outing. The George Eastman House has invited us back again to paint. Many museum goers enjoyed the event as a bonus to their anticipated outing.

Tomorrow the Park Avenue Festival, in Rochester, New York begins only a block away from the subject of today's painting and Rochester is set for another fantastic weekend with tens of thousands in attendance. A few members of GVPAP will be showing and selling their paintings in that venue. Come on down if you are in the area and enjoy the event for yourself.

Today's Painting, "Repose" Gordon van Vliet

Titled Repose, today's painting is a sketch study in oil to observe a certain pose of this wonderful model. She has a great body and face with great angular features. We have studied her several times and she is always a pleasure to work with. This was done last night at the Boxart Street Studio. Todd Ryan had perhaps the best rendition of the evening. Tough night to paint with temperature at 96F, however the oil paint was smooth as silk.

Today on Wednesday, August 03, 2007 I painted out at Lake Ontario with the GVPAP. Again it was hot and humid. I did not spend much time on this one but it was fun working at painting this little channel flowing under the bridge from a pond to the lake. A feww fish braved the hot weather to jump. The rest just hid on the botoom. I painted in oil as my normal practice. This painting is on canvas, 11 x 14 .

A few months ago I painted this model. I like the way she appeared on the canvas. The bright and cheery rendering certainly captures her personality. It was a fun night. Painting is 18 x 24.

Tomorrow morning I will be with GVPAP painting at the George Eastman House gardens with model Brittany. This event should produce some nice pieces. Brittany is exquisite both in her natural beauty as well as her fine modeling skills. We have used her for portrait and figure work several times. I'll show a few paintings of her from other artists as well.

Painting Today, "Afternoon Dreaming" Gordon van Vliet

Today's Painting is 11 x14 oil on canvas. The sketch took about two hours at this point and will probably continue or start a new piece based on this. "Afternoon Dreaming" inspired by the hot, hot weather in upstate New York. Enough to make mirages appear and the mind escape. I need a better camera, so much is missed by the grainy shots.

Painting Today, "Penguin Guarding Horn", Gordon van Vliet

Today the painting is oil on board 7 x 5, titled "Penguin Guarding Horn". The Horn is from a cow in Nepal from a trip in 1984. The penguin a paperweight from a friend. Material is brass. The picture did not come out well. The actual painting is better. Enjoy.

Well the easel is from ASW, about $100(now $119), but the the palette is custom made by me. We use a palette like this on all the studio set-ups at Christian Kolupski's place. Great idea. It is 1/4″ hardboard or glass palette captured in a wood frame. Then clamped with toggle bolts or turn knobs and made in such a way so you can slide it up and down. Also needed is an additional top piece that holds the canvas, turned upside down to hold the bottom of the canvas. Now you have full adjustability. Perhaps I should create an article showing the steps to make one. Also would you consider a reciprocal link. I find these help traffic at the blog ever so much.

Painting Today, "Woman in Blue" by Gordon van Vliet

This is a new piece I began yesterday with a model. She is dressed in a beautiful blue gown with trimmings. Classic reclining pose on a Victorian couch. I will work on this more. Particularly the upper torso and face. This painting is a little larger at about 28 x 20 oil on canvas. I love the lower dress and the arms and hands. Let me hear your comments too.

Todays panting is 5 x 7 on board titled, "Snail No. 1" and is painted right here in Brighton, NY. Challenge to paint while things are moving, the leaf drying out and the changing shadows as the sun came and went behind the clouds. I hope you enjoy it and please do offer your comments here.

A Painting Today, "You Can't Keep a Good Man Down"

This new painting I am working on is 16 x 20 oil on canvas of my wife's great grandpa Twitchell. A farmer in Maine during the early part of the last century, he had a lot of children, when he was struck with polio. The story goes that he received some charity from the towns people, but when his children were teased in town and at school, he forthwith refused any future charity and farmed his land on his hands and knees for the rest of his days. This he did successfully and with my future great admiration. I think when I finish this painting I may title it, "You Can't Keep a Good Man Down". Let me know what you think.

I am getting closer to my goal of creating on painting a day. Many of my friends in the art world are following this discipline and I can only see good come from it.

Portrait "Woman with Turban"

Tonight I finished a new portrait. This is painted on un-stretched canvas, oil and probably will stretch out to 16 x 20. The model is a beautiful young lady and is wearing her hair up in an elaborate scarf of grey and gold. I hope everyone likes it as much as I do.

Also is a plein air picture by Christian Kolupski, oil on canvas, showing myself painting the model out of doors, in the woods, at dusk. Chris certainly has a lot of talent which I continually see demonstrated in his work. Click the link in the right hand column to see more.

Tomorrow morning I will again be painted a model in a garden on the west side of town.

Portrait "David No 1" 18" x 24" oil on canvas board

This is a portrait of a model that I met at Steve Carpenter's Studio. The values are dark to light with not much middle tone. Background in this piece was a challenge because of the varied color and strong. In a full finished portrait rather than the study here I would grey out and make the background less defined, add more middle value and brig up the highlights. I like the way his shirt came out. This piece is called "David No. 1" and is oil on canvas board 18" x 24"

Be sure to check out the links to the right under artist. There are several who utilize this "Painting A Day" format quite successfully.

I am of the opinion that an artist should adopt this method for their own practice, to further their skills or as studies for larger works. Sure, put them "For Sale", but don't get discouraged if your results do not mirror those of other successful artists. Daily painting is the best thing an artist can do. If you hone your skill, sales will surely follow if you make your work available.

Monday I am painting at Lake Ontario once more with the GVPAP to practice and refine my ability.

I finished another portrait last Wednesday. Models name is David.

We were rained out at the GVPAP paintout yesterday. 3.33 inches of rain. Rochester alltime 1 day record is 3.77 inches, so a lot of people ended up wet. The weatherman said this was the fourth wettest day on record here.

This is painted 11 x 14 oil on canvas board. The view is looking West toward Charlotte Pier. By the time I finished the sunwas setting over the power plant twin stacks. The sail boat turned out well and certain aspects of the waves. The land near the smoke stacks have a few buildings that I like also. The painting appears a little greener than life, so I will pay attention to this in future ones. Very difficult to capture as the light was rapidly changing. Waves are going to take practice from life. I will probably do some studies of other artists sea scapes. Next outdoor is the High Falls in downtown Rochester.

Finally Summer

This was painted at Turning Point Park in Rochester in the woods at eventide. Soft blue light with dappled sun. The modle is admiring the sunlight through the trees. Small early summer flowers bloom around her and fill the air with fragrance. It is called "Finally Summer" 11x14 oil on canvas board.

Today's Painting "Simple Pleasure Lost" Gordon van Vliet

This beautiful model is "Christine". She is contemplating the mysteries of the past while Diana, a giant in her own time, admires how far women have come in our own time. Diana craves a smoke and sophistication that eludes her in the Netherworld. I have provided some details. This oil on canvas board measures 18 x 24. I call it "Simple Pleasure Lost"

Noah as Big Boss

Christian Kolupski painted this impressionistic portrait of my son Noah at a recent demonstration held at his studio on June 3, 2006. It is now displayed at Rochester Art Supply. Noah just turned five in May and sat very still for this 3 hours session. I lured him to the committment by telling him we would listen to the Star Wars soundtrack. Chris told him the story whil he painted. Noah was intriqued with the story and also by the painting process which he watched in a mirror arranged to show the artist canvas.

Cobbs Hill, Rochester, NY Plein Air Paintings

Well I have completed my first two outdoor paintings. on is of the Rochester, NY skyline from Cobbs Hill looking West. In the photo to the lower left you can see the skyline image and me at the back and left. The upper left photo is the complete painting about 4"H oil on board and the photo at right is a close up detail. It shows the First Federal bldg at left, then Kodak tower, Bausch & Lomb, Xerox. In the lfull picture it continues with the Lincon Tower, Midtown, then Marine Midland finally fadining at far write with the Eastman School dormitory building. The buildings in the center portion of the picture are more obscure and they are not the subject anyway.

Next is a 4x6 oil on board painting of a water hyacinth that was blooming in my front yard. I paint two gold fish which are visible to the left and right of the bloom.

Also I sold this portrait on July fourth. I received a phone call from the model offering to purchase it as a present for his parents. He appreciated the likeness that I captured of him. I enjoyed very much paint his glsses and eyes behind. Oil on canvas board 18 x 24.

GENESEE VALLEY PLEIN AIR PAINTERS

A long absence had deterred me from posting as I completed a consulting agreement with my former furniture business and cleaned up other loose ends. As of June 13, 2006 I have been converting a 1-1/2 car garage to a painting studio and workshop. It will be interesting to see how I adapt in the long cold NY winter. At left was a friendly doe who came to enjoy the mulberries across the driveway from my studio. A lot different from the environment of center city that I have been accustomed to these past 26 years. Nice subject material to paint also.

I joined Genesee Valley Plein Air Painters on June 26th and attended to watch a paintout on Friday evening the 29th. Click on the link to find out more about this group. They have been noted in Fine Art Connoisseur magazine. That's how I found them in the first place and then ended up in a figure drawing class with some of the members. Barbara Jablonski invited me to join. They seem like a fun group and they paint real fine. Next outing is to paint the Rochester skyline from Cobbs Hill Park.

I have continued my portrait studies at Boxart Street Studio and continuing to improve.

Objective Art

Today I am writing about objective art. What is it? Simply this, that an artist think first what it is he is trying to communicate to his audience. Who is he speaking to? Then he composes his artwork in such a manner to effectively communicate that message whether it is an emotional or intellectual response.

It is not subjective. It is not without input from the artist. It is not whatever the audience sees or feels in it. Rather the artist is successful only when his message is what is primarily seen and to that degree.

Some interesting web sites that discuss this are ARC International and Art 21 Org .

I also found this interesting image and comment. The comment is posted on the Penn State Objectivist Club site. Here is a quote from that post "When an economist referred to him once as an audacious gambler, Mulligan said, “The reason why you’ll never get rich is because you think that what I do is gambling”.”"

Below are selections of some studies completed between October 2005 and January 2006. They are all done in a relatively loose style, Aaron being the most finished and painted in a north light. The pictures are taken with my low resolution camera, but I hope to replace with better images soon.
